The Washington Wizards plan to retain head coach Brian Keefe for the 2026/27 NBA season, general manager Will Dawkins confirmed Thursday during the team’s end-of-season media session.

“Yeah, I anticipate Brian Keefe to be here,” Dawkins said when pressed on the organization’s coaching plans.

Keefe, 45, has posted a 43-160 (.212) record since replacing Wes Unseld Jr. midway through the 2023/24 campaign. Despite the poor win-loss mark, Washington’s front office has emphasized draft positioning and player development over immediate results during an extended rebuild.

Team officials credit Keefe for the growth of young center Alex Sarr, forward Kyshawn George, and rookies Tre Johnson, Will Riley, and Jamir Watkins this season. Even after acquiring veteran stars Anthony Davis and Trae Young in midseason trades, the club intends to keep development as its primary focus, viewing Keefe as a suitable leader for that approach.

According to multiple team sources, Keefe’s collaborative style with the front office and his popularity among players have strengthened his position. In January, team president Michael Winger praised Keefe for establishing “a culture of competitiveness” in Washington.
