The Chicago Bulls are moving toward a short list of finalists in their head-coaching search and current assistant Wes Unseld Jr. is on track to make that group, according to league sources cited by reporters Jake Fischer and Marc Stein.

The organization has already spoken with at least a dozen candidates. One name is no longer on the board: longtime Spurs assistant Sean Sweeney, who was hired this week as the Orlando Magic’s new head coach. Sweeney had been ranked highly on Chicago’s initial list, multiple outlets reported.

The Bulls aim to settle on their finalists by early next week. Unseld, 50, has served as Chicago’s lead assistant for the past two seasons under Billy Donovan, who left the franchise about a week after the 2025-26 season ended. Unseld previously spent two-and-a-half seasons as head coach of the Washington Wizards and accumulated 16 years of NBA assistant-coaching experience before that.

Other names still under consideration include Chris Quinn of the Heat and Micah Nori of the Timberwolves, sources told Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints. Nori is also a finalist in the Portland Trail Blazers’ coaching search, Fischer and Stein added.
