The Golden State Warriors looked into several high-profile deals this offseason as part of a larger plan to persuade LeBron James to join the franchise, according to ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel.
Calls to Wizards on Anthony Davis
Sources told Siegel that Golden State contacted the Washington Wizards about acquiring Anthony Davis, believing James might follow his former Lakers teammate to the Bay Area. Talks stalled quickly after the Warriors deemed Washington’s asking price “unreasonable,” and no formal negotiations took place.
Inquiry on Jaylen Brown
The Warriors also reached out to the Boston Celtics regarding Jaylen Brown before Boston ultimately traded him to the Philadelphia 76ers. Boston reportedly showed no interest in the Warriors’ proposals and ended discussions almost immediately.
Jimmy Butler Floated as Trade Chip
Siegel noted that Golden State was willing to include Jimmy Butler—whom the organization otherwise preferred to keep—along with draft compensation in potential packages for either Davis or Brown.
LeBron’s Concerns and Decision
While James had “genuine interest” in teaming up with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, he was said to be uneasy about the Warriors’ supporting offense and uncertain about waiting for Butler to return from a torn ACL. By early July, the belief around the league was that James would choose an Eastern Conference destination, and he eventually signed with Philadelphia.
Focus Shifts to Curry and Green
Curry becomes extension-eligible on Aug. 6, and the franchise is prepared to grant him a one- or two-year deal on terms largely of his choosing, Siegel reported. Green, who declined his $27.7 million player option, is likewise expected to remain in Golden State, either by re-signing for one year at the same figure or by agreeing to a multiyear contract that aligns with Curry’s timeline.
Additional Roster Moves Considered
The Warriors have mutual interest with Gary Payton II on a veteran minimum deal. They have also contacted DeMar DeRozan’s representatives, though competing offers above the minimum make an agreement unlikely for now. Golden State previously explored a trade for Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr. but has since moved on.
The Warriors continue to search for roster upgrades after missing out on James, Davis, Brown, and Porter, leaving open the possibility of further activity before training camp.
