Golden State Warriors general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. said Tuesday that the organization is “getting close to finalizing the roster,” indicating the team’s offseason moves may soon be wrapped up.
Dunleavy’s brief update comes as the Warriors continue to pursue four-time MVP LeBron James, who informed the Los Angeles Lakers he will not return for a 24th NBA season. Golden State has been consistently mentioned among the leading suitors since James became available.
According to multiple reports, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green have been in direct contact with James to recruit the 39-year-old forward. League sources told Hoops Wire the Warriors remain “firmly in the mix,” though the Cleveland Cavaliers are still regarded as the favorite.
ESPN’s Anthony Slater recently reported that Warriors players have maintained direct communication with James, while team executives remain cautious about their chances.
James has also been linked to the Cavaliers, Miami Heat, Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves. He is expected to appear at Fanatics Fest in New York later this week, and many around the league anticipate a decision before the weekend.
Dunleavy did not indicate whether his comment on roster completion was tied to James’s timetable, leaving the franchise—and the rest of the NBA—waiting on the superstar’s next move.
