LOS ANGELES — LeBron James has told the Los Angeles Lakers he will enter unrestricted free agency and play for another team in the 2026-27 season, according to agent Rich Paul, leaving the Warriors, Cavaliers and Heat as leading candidates for his next stop.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Tuesday that the 41-year-old forward informed Lakers president Rob Pelinka of his decision well ahead of free agency, which opens tonight. James spent eight seasons in Los Angeles and captured the 2020 championship alongside Anthony Davis in the Orlando “bubble.”

Three Teams in the Spotlight

Multiple league sources told Hoops Wire that Golden State, Cleveland and Miami are the clubs most often mentioned in league circles:

  • Warriors: Golden State is exploring a deal for Anthony Davis, now with the Wizards, that could potentially create a new core featuring James, Davis, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
  • Cavaliers: Cleveland is considered the sentimental favorite for a reunion with the Akron native, though salary-cap maneuvering would be required.
  • Heat: Miami recently acquired Giannis Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee, and James previously won two titles with the franchise in 2012 and 2013.

Lakers Shift Toward Doncic Era

The Lakers traded Davis to the Dallas Mavericks for Luka Doncic in 2024. While James and Doncic praised each other publicly, questions persisted about chemistry on the court. Sources said Los Angeles is prepared to build its roster around Doncic moving forward.

Still Productive at 41

James, who turns 42 on December 30, is coming off another productive regular season and a strong individual playoff showing despite the Lakers’ second-round sweep by the Thunder. On Monday, he posted social-media footage of himself golfing at Firestone Country Club and driving through his hometown of Akron, Ohio.

Contract figures and exact interest from the three reported contenders remain unclear, but teams expect James to command a significant salary while pursuing another championship.
