Trae Young Likely to Decline $49 Million Option, Targeting New Three-Year Deal With Wizards

Washington Wizards guard Trae Young is expected to opt out of his $49 million player option for next season and pursue a multiyear contract with the club, according to reporting from Marc Stein.

Stein notes that the figures under discussion remain in the $120 million range over three years, mirroring projections that surfaced immediately after Washington acquired the four-time All-Star in a mid-season trade.

Key Deadlines and Contract Scenarios

  • June 23: Young must decide whether to exercise or decline the player option on the opening night of the 2026 NBA Draft.
  • If he declines: The 25-year-old can sign a three-year extension worth up to $156 million before June 30, or wait until July to ink a four-year contract that could reach $222.8 million.
  • If he opts in: Washington would lock in his $49 million salary for next season and could add additional years through an extension beginning in July.

Injury-Shortened Debut Season

Young appeared in just 15 total games this season due to a knee strain, quad issues and back soreness. After arriving in Washington in January, he played five contests for the Wizards, averaging 15.2 points and 6.2 assists while shooting .595 from the field, .429 from three-point range and .708 at the free-throw line in 20.8 minutes per game.

Roster Outlook

The Wizards finished with the league’s worst record but hold the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming draft. They also expect to have Anthony Davis on the floor next season; the veteran center did not appear in a game after being acquired from Dallas in February. Young, Davis, recent No. 2 pick Alex Sarr, and the forthcoming top selection are the only players slated to earn more than $10 million annually over the next two years, giving Washington significant payroll flexibility as it attempts a rapid rebuild.
