Star guard Anthony Edwards downplayed any panic inside the Timberwolves’ locker room after Tuesday’s lopsided Game 5 loss to the Spurs left Minnesota one defeat from elimination in the Western Conference semifinals.
“I don’t see nobody in our locker room that’s too worried,” Edwards told reporters. “There’s another basketball game. Come out, put your boots on and get ready to go to war.” Game 6 is set for Friday.
McDaniels’ foul issues
Forward Jaden McDaniels has been hampered by fouls throughout the series, collecting five in less than 30 minutes during the Game 5 setback. Edwards emphasized that keeping the 2023-24 All-Defensive selection on the floor is critical. “Everything starts with Jaden McDaniels, trying to keep him out of foul trouble,” he said. “It hurts everybody when he gets in foul trouble.”
Possible lineup change
With veterans Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert struggling, head coach Chris Finch could start Naz Reid in Friday’s do-or-die contest, according to The Athletic. Edwards cited a series of “game-plan mistakes” against a disciplined San Antonio squad as the Wolves’ primary problem, noting lapses on both ends of the floor.
Front-office addition
Off the court, the Timberwolves named Michael Dillon their new chief financial officer and chief operating officer. Dillon previously served as CFO of the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins and spent eight years with MLB’s Houston Astros.
