Phoenix Suns weigh roster overhaul as cap pressures mount

The Phoenix Suns may explore a dramatic roster reset this summer, including the possibility of trading All-Star guard Devin Booker, according to an offseason analysis by Yossi Gozlan at the Third Apron.
Gozlan writes that Phoenix, which surprised observers by winning 45 games and earning the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference in 2025-26, appears to have reached its competitive ceiling. He argues the club should move its top players for draft capital to escape a restrictive salary-cap outlook that features significant dead money owed to Bradley Beal.
Luxury-tax crunch complicates free agency
Because of its payroll, Phoenix must shed salary merely to stay below the luxury-tax line while attempting to re-sign key free agents Collin Gillespie, Jordan Goodwin and Mark Williams. Gozlan notes that dealing Booker—or veterans such as Dillon Brooks—would create the financial flexibility the franchise currently lacks.
Contract talks and free-agent decisions
Duane Rankin of The Arizona Republic reports that the Suns and Gillespie are already negotiating a new deal that could reach $40 million over four years. Williams, a restricted free agent if tendered a $9.6 million qualifying offer, is not guaranteed to return. Gozlan labels the starting center a sign-and-trade candidate and highlights the Chicago Bulls as a logical suitor.
Rookies eye larger roles
Rankin adds that the offseason will be pivotal for first-year players Khaman Maluach, Rasheer Fleming and Koby Brea. Maluach could step in as the starting center if Williams departs, while Fleming has a chance to claim the power-forward spot with further development. Brea, who spent the season on a two-way contract, must make significant strides to join the 2026-27 rotation.
Ishbia endorses last year’s Durant trade
In an interview with Rankin, owner Mat Ishbia said the organization hopes to retain its free agents and that the interest is mutual. Ishbia also defended last summer’s decision to send Kevin Durant to Houston, noting the move yielded Brooks, Jalen Green, Maluach and Fleming. “It turned out to be a fantastic trade for us and a huge part of resetting our identity,” he told the newspaper.
