Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr spent about two hours on Monday in a closed-door discussion with team owner Joe Lacob and general manager Mike Dunleavy Jr., ESPN reported. The session was described as constructive, but no decision was reached on whether the 60-year-old coach will return next season.
A second meeting is expected next week, according to the report. Kerr is taking a short, previously scheduled golf trip in the interim, and sources told ESPN he is “weighing it all.” One person familiar with the talks said, “It’s April. We don’t need to rush.”
Kerr’s contract expired when Golden State’s season ended. He has led the club for 12 years, winning multiple NBA championships and guiding stars such as Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. After the season, Kerr acknowledged the uncertainty, saying, “I still love coaching, but I get it. These jobs all have an expiration date.”
League sources characterized the ongoing dialogue as purely a basketball decision. Key questions include whether Kerr wants to continue, whether the organization seeks adjustments to the coaching staff or system, and whether the roster can be remodeled into a title contender. The Warriors own the No. 11 position in the May 10 draft lottery, a pick that could influence upcoming decisions.
For now, the franchise is not pursuing alternative coaching candidates. A search would begin only if Kerr opts to step away.
