Executives across the NBA are monitoring LeBron James as the 22-time All-Star approaches free agency with no clear favorite emerging, according to reporting by Marc Stein and Jake Fischer.

Three clubs seen as early leaders

Sources told Stein and Fischer that Cleveland, Golden State and Miami are widely viewed as the primary contenders. A return to the Cavaliers would reunite the 41-year-old with his hometown franchise, offering a storyline that could bolster plans for a documentary project chronicling what many believe will be his final NBA season in 2026/27. The Warriors have long coveted the four-time MVP, while the Heat represent another former stop with championship history.

New York is among roughly a dozen additional teams that have expressed interest, with Minnesota, Denver and Philadelphia also mentioned as possible secondary suitors.

Hachimura draws multiple pitches

Free-agent forward Rui Hachimura has received interest from San Antonio, Detroit and Brooklyn, the authors report. San Antonio ultimately pivoted to Tobias Harris, and Detroit is finalizing a sign-and-trade for John Collins. Meanwhile, Hachimura’s representatives have fielded overtures from Minnesota and Golden State. League sources indicate the Timberwolves currently rank the 28-year-old at the top of their power-forward wish list despite limited cap flexibility.

Lakers inquire about Kuminga

After surrendering control of four future first-round picks to land Walker Kessler in a sign-and-trade with Utah, the Lakers are seeking additional front-court help and have contacted the Warriors regarding Jonathan Kuminga. Cleveland and Milwaukee have also shown interest, while a reunion with Atlanta remains possible, according to multiple team sources.

Donovan to join Spurs staff

Billy Donovan is expected to replace Sean Sweeney as the Spurs’ lead assistant after Sweeney accepted the Orlando Magic head-coaching job. Donovan, 61, has not been an assistant since the 1993/94 season at Kentucky, but one rival coach told The Stein Line that serving as Gregg Popovich’s top aide is “the best assistant job in the league” and should position Donovan for another head-coaching opportunity.
