The San Antonio Spurs do not appear ready to part ways with point guard De’Aaron Fox, despite his injury-hampered showing in the NBA Finals, multiple reports indicate.
Spurs back Fox after Finals loss
Fox averaged 12.8 points on 34.3% shooting while playing through an ankle injury as New York closed out San Antonio in five games. Even so, San Antonio Express-News reporter Jeff McDonald and ESPN’s Brian Windhorst both report the front office remains committed to the 26-year-old as its starting guard.
“We want to continue to work together, continue to get better obviously as individuals and as a team,” Fox told reporters after the series, echoing management’s stance.
Speculation about Fox’s future had intensified following the emergence of young guards Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle, but no trade discussions are currently expected, according to the reports.
Philadelphia weighs three team options
The Philadelphia 76ers have until June 29 to decide on team options for forwards Dominick Barlow and Trendon Watford and guard Dalen Terry, outlined by Philly Voice’s Adam Aaronson.
• Barlow, who earned rotation minutes after arriving on a two-way deal, could see his option declined so the club can negotiate a multi-year contract.
• A similar approach is being considered for Watford.
• Terry’s $2.6 million option is expected to be exercised, keeping him under contract for 2024-25.
While none of the moves would create major headlines, Philadelphia’s decisions will shape the team’s depth chart ahead of free agency.
Expansion discussions move to July agenda
The NBA’s Board of Governors is slated to meet in July, and expansion is expected to be a primary topic, according to Windhorst. Las Vegas and Seattle remain the leading candidates for new franchises after months of market evaluation and ownership interest checks.
If the league proceeds, steps would include establishing a timetable, opening the bidding process and outlining expansion-draft rules. Because both cities would join the Western Conference, one current Western team — potentially the Timberwolves, Grizzlies or Pelicans — could be shifted to the East to balance the alignment.
