The Philadelphia 76ers removed Daryl Morey from his post as president of basketball operations on Thursday night, ending his six-season tenure with the franchise. Head coach Nick Nurse will remain in charge of the bench.

“I have a tremendous amount of respect for Daryl,” managing partner Josh Harris said in a statement. “After speaking with him, we determined it was time for a fresh start.”

Former Golden State Warriors executive Bob Myers has been tapped to lead the search for Morey’s replacement and will handle basketball operations in the meantime. “I believe this is a destination for top talent,” Myers said, adding that the process will begin immediately and “will be thorough and deliberate.”

Mixed Results Under Morey

During Morey’s stint, Philadelphia went 270-212 in the regular season and reached the playoffs five times but never advanced past the second round. The franchise has not appeared in the Eastern Conference finals since 2001.

Major moves under Morey included trading for James Harden, signing Paul George, and extending Joel Embiid’s contract. However, Embiid, George, and Tyrese Maxey managed just 43 games together across two seasons, finishing 21-22 in those contests.

Nurse, hired three years ago, holds a 116-130 record. This spring he guided the Sixers past Boston in the opening round before the club was swept in the conference semifinals.

“To our fans, your frustration is warranted,” Harris said. “We’ve fallen well short.”
