The Philadelphia 76ers have promoted assistant general manager Jameer Nelson to executive vice president of basketball operations, making him the second-highest ranking voice in the department, league sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Nelson will report to newly hired president of basketball operations Mike Gansey, who recently succeeded former president Daryl Morey. The promotion had been widely anticipated; multiple reports indicated Nelson was in line for a larger role regardless of who filled the organization’s top basketball position. Nelson also interviewed for the president’s post before the club selected Gansey.

Former All-Star Continues Rapid Front-Office Rise

A native of Pennsylvania and standout at Saint Joseph’s University, Nelson played 14 NBA seasons and earned an All-Star selection with the Orlando Magic. He entered Philadelphia’s front office six years ago as a scout and has steadily climbed the ladder since.

Other Front-Office Moves

The 76ers have also secured Prosper Karangwa with a contract extension after external interest from the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks, Charania reported. Veteran NBA reporter Marc Stein previously noted that Karangwa was expected to stay.

Longtime general manager Elton Brand is not expected to return in that capacity, though discussions are underway regarding a new role with the franchise’s parent company. Brand, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1999 draft and a former NBA All-Star, did not interview for the president of basketball operations position but remains well regarded within the organization.
