The Philadelphia 76ers mounted an aggressive, player-driven campaign to sign LeBron James during this summer’s free-agency period, league sources told multiple outlets.
Center Joel Embiid, guard Tyrese Maxey and forward Jaylen Brown maintained regular contact with the four-time MVP throughout negotiations, according to The Athletic’s Tony Jones. Embiid, limited to 39, 19 and 38 games over the past three seasons, reportedly assured James he would “do everything possible” to stay on the floor more consistently.
Head coach Nick Nurse joined the effort as well. Shams Charania of ESPN reported that Nurse was the only head coach who personally spoke with James during his decision-making process.
Three-team shortlist
Despite widespread speculation linking James to several franchises, his options were ultimately narrowed to three, a source familiar with the talks told Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports. The finalists were the 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers and Miami Heat. The Golden State Warriors were discussed primarily because of the allure of teaming with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, the source said.
James chose Philadelphia, bypassing the sentimental pull of finishing his career in Cleveland or Miami, and agreed to a two-year contract worth approximately $8 million. He joins a retooled Sixers roster featuring Embiid, Maxey, Brown and rookie guard VJ Edgecombe.
