Former Seattle SuperSonics star Shawn Kemp was ordered to serve 30 days of electronic home monitoring after admitting to firing shots at two men in a Washington state mall parking lot in March 2023.
Pierce County Superior Court Judge Michael Schwartz handed down the sentence on August 23, 2025. In addition to the home monitoring, the six-time NBA All-Star must complete one year of supervision by the state Department of Corrections and perform 240 hours of community service.
Kemp, 55, pleaded guilty in May to second-degree assault. Prosecutors had recommended nine months in jail, a year of supervision and restitution payments. Judge Schwartz cited the circumstances of the case in opting for a lighter penalty that does not include jail time.
Defense attorneys argued Kemp acted in self-defense, saying he returned fire after one of the men shot at him from inside a Toyota 4Runner. They also said the men had stolen Kemp’s truck, cellphone and sports memorabilia earlier in Seattle, leading to the confrontation outside the mall.
Both the 4Runner and another vehicle were struck by bullets, but no injuries were reported.
Attorney W. Scott Boatman released a statement on Kemp’s behalf to ESPN’s Marc J. Spears, noting the former forward’s gratitude for avoiding jail and his commitment to warning young people about impulsive decisions.
Kemp played in the NBA from 1989 to 2003.
