The Oklahoma City Thunder’s bid for back-to-back championships ended with Sunday’s 111-103 Game 7 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference finals, but star guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made clear he will not take on a new role this summer.
Asked whether he expects to weigh in on offseason moves such as team options for Lu Dort and Isaiah Hartenstein, the reigning MVP replied, “I will give zero input,” according to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype. “I will let Sam Presti, the greatest GM ever, do his job.”
Gilgeous-Alexander’s stance contrasts with the growing league trend of star players influencing personnel decisions. The 25-year-old says he trusts the front office that transformed Oklahoma City into a contender and assembled the league’s largest cache of future draft picks.
In the decisive loss, Gilgeous-Alexander scored 35 points and dished out nine assists, but a 40-point night from rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama propelled San Antonio into the NBA Finals. Oklahoma City, which entered the postseason as the defending NBA champion, now turns to an offseason filled with roster questions and abundant draft capital.
The Thunder guard, however, reiterated his belief that those choices rest solely with Presti. “I wouldn’t have it any other way,” he said.
