Four names have surfaced as the primary contenders to become the next head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, according to sources cited by Rod Walker of NOLA.com. Former NBA guard Rajon Rondo, current assistant coaches James Borrego, Darvin Ham and Steve Hetzel are said to be the leading options in the franchise’s ongoing search.

Walker reports that, based on his understanding of the process, Rondo and Hetzel appear to hold an edge among the group. The Pelicans are working to replace Willie Green, who was dismissed earlier this offseason.

Rondo’s Profile

Rondo, 40, played one season in New Orleans during 2017-18, a campaign that culminated in one of only two playoff series victories in team history. Walker notes that the veteran guard’s reputation for toughness and leadership remains intact after a 16-year playing career (2006-2022) that included two NBA championships and multiple individual honors. Rondo has not previously served as a head coach; he spent the past two seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks as a coaching associate.

Hetzel’s Background

Brooklyn Nets assistant Steve Hetzel also lacks head-coaching experience but is viewed internally as a strong motivator, Walker writes. His career trajectory mirrors that of Jordan Ott, who climbed the ranks before guiding Phoenix to a playoff berth in 2025-26. Hetzel and Pelicans head of basketball operations Joe Dumars worked together for four seasons in Detroit, a connection that could benefit his candidacy.

Borrego and Ham Still in Mix

James Borrego and Darvin Ham round out the reported quartet of finalists. Borrego previously served as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, while Ham led the Los Angeles Lakers before becoming an assistant in Los Angeles this season. Specific details regarding their interviews with New Orleans have not yet been disclosed.
