New York City natives Julian Champagnie of the Spurs and Jose Alvarado of the Knicks carried their long-standing high school rivalry onto the NBA’s biggest stage, exchanging baskets and trash talk during Game 1 of the Finals. The two first faced each other in the Catholic League—Champagnie at Bishop Loughlin, Alvarado at Christ the King—and their competitive banter quickly resurfaced once the series began.

“He makes one, he talks. I make one, I talk. That’s just how New York is,” Champagnie said after the opener.

Castle details defensive game plan

San Antonio rookie guard Stephon Castle, tasked with guarding two-time MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander in the conference finals and Knicks star Jalen Brunson in the current round, told the New York Daily News he focuses on each player’s preferred angles and pace. Castle noted that Gilgeous-Alexander attacks the rim more aggressively, while Brunson relies on pump fakes and mid-range precision.

Fan removed from courtside

The Knicks barred a fan who verbally harassed Brunson during Game 1 from sitting courtside for the remainder of the Finals. Brunson had to be held back by Alvarado and referee Scott Foster after the final buzzer.

Robinson’s technical foul rescinded

The NBA has voided the technical foul assessed to Knicks center Mitchell Robinson midway through the second quarter of Game 1, the league announced.

Record prices for Garden games

Demand for Madison Square Garden seats is reaching unprecedented levels. As of Friday, the lowest ticket for Monday’s Game 3 on Gametime was listed at $9,130. For Wednesday’s Game 4—when New York could secure its first championship since 1973—most StubHub prices exceed $20,000, with courtside spots ranging from $70,000 to $140,000.
