NBA agent Rich Paul spent several weeks indicating that LeBron James had not spoken with any teams during free agency. That narrative shifted when Shams Charania of ESPN reported on Paul’s own “Game Over” podcast that the four-time MVP had, in fact, met with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The disclosure matched a claim made three weeks earlier by Tony Rizzo of ESPN Cleveland, who said the Cavaliers and James held a free-agency meeting. At the time, Rizzo’s report was largely dismissed because it conflicted with Paul’s public stance.

Charania’s confirmation drew additional attention because the reporter is represented by Klutch Sports Group, the agency Paul founded and leads. The overlap raised questions about how and when information regarding James becomes public.

Throughout the summer, Klutch’s messaging strategy kept speculation high. Episodes of the “Game Over” podcast were widely monitored for updates on James’s plans, and even James’s final contract decision surfaced in an unexpected forum when Topps trading cards revealed it before traditional NBA insiders issued their usual tweets.

Paul has not commented on the timing of Charania’s revelation. The Cavaliers have also declined to discuss any off-season conversations with James. No evidence suggests the parties attempted to mislead the public; agents routinely protect sensitive negotiations.

Still, the sequence of events—denial of meetings, an early local report, and eventual confirmation on a platform controlled by Paul—has intensified focus on Klutch Sports’ role in shaping the off-season storyline surrounding its highest-profile client.
