The Cleveland Cavaliers are evaluating whether to move veteran point guard Dennis Schroder as part of efforts to reduce payroll, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst said during an appearance on ESPN Cleveland.

Windhorst described the possibility as an exploratory step rather than an imminent decision, noting that president of basketball operations Koby Altman and his staff typically survey the market early in the offseason.

Recent arrival

Schroder, 32, joined Cleveland in a February deal with the Sacramento Kings that also brought guard Keon Ellis in exchange for DeAndre Hunter. The German guard played 30 regular-season games for the Cavaliers, averaging 8.2 points and 4.3 assists while shooting 40 percent from the field and 29 percent from three-point range.

Contract outlook

Schroder is under contract for $14.8 million in 2026-27 and $15.5 million in 2027-28, the final season of the agreement. If traded again, it would mark his 12th NBA stop in 14 years; he spent his first five seasons with the Atlanta Hawks and has played for 11 teams overall.

Other offseason decisions

Cleveland also faces several roster calls in free agency. Ellis, Dean Wade, Larry Nance Jr. and Thomas Bryant are set to become unrestricted free agents, while the club holds team options on guard Craig Porter Jr. ($2.4 million) and two-way center Olivier Sarr. The Cavaliers’ free-agency discussions are expected to start with James Harden, according to the report.

With the NBA’s transaction window approaching, the front office is expected to continue assessing cost-cutting avenues and potential roster tweaks.
