Pistons Enter Pivotal Offseason With Thompson Extension, Added Playmaking Atop Agenda

The Detroit Pistons begin a decisive summer focused on locking in First Team All-Defense wing Ausar Thompson and bolstering the roster around franchise guard Cade Cunningham.

Team president Trajan Langdon confirmed the club will weigh an extension for Thompson after his breakout second season. “He took a huge step last year, and you saw how much he impacted the game on both ends,” Langdon said, adding that Thompson’s work ethic and team-first approach make him “big-time” for Detroit’s future.

Langdon expects the 21-year-old to expand his offensive arsenal during an unrestricted summer program. “Last year he did not play a full season,” the executive noted. “We won’t have as many restrictions on him this summer … you will not have to worry about Thompson putting in the work.”

Trade Deadline Perspective

At February’s deadline, Langdon shipped Jaden Ivey for Kevin Huerter and the No. 21 pick in the 2026 draft but chose not to pursue a larger move. The second-round playoff exit, he said, clarified Detroit’s needs. “We’re always going to feel like we can get better,” Langdon remarked. “Nobody thought I’d be getting championship-contender questions two years after taking the job, but here we are.”

Contention Window Opens

Despite the postseason loss, Detroit retains all of its future first-round selections—five of which are trade-eligible—and 15 future second-rounders. The organization also holds significant salary-cap flexibility compared with several Eastern Conference rivals. “All of our guys are going to iterate and get better,” Langdon said. “We’ll take a deep dive and figure out what we need to add.”

Primary Offseason Need: Additional Ball-Handling

Improving playmaking depth ranks high on the summer checklist. Langdon emphasized that more creators ease Cunningham’s workload and diversify the offense. “The more ball-handling you can have on the floor, the better,” he stated, pointing to teams that succeed with multiple initiators. Thompson’s progress as a handler will be monitored, but Detroit is prepared to seek external help if necessary.

The Pistons hold the No. 21 pick acquired from Sacramento, a full slate of future assets and ample cap space as they seek to transform regular-season success into a deeper playoff run.
