New Orleans is gaining traction as the potential destination for Grizzlies guard Ja Morant should Memphis elect to move him, according to NBA insider Sam Amick.
Appearing on FanDuel TV’s “Run It Back,” the Athletic reporter said the Pelicans currently look like the strongest suitor among the clubs that have checked on the 26-year-old former All-Star. Amick also mentioned the Kings as an interested party but noted he would “probably push it toward New Orleans” as the frontrunner. The Timberwolves have likewise surfaced as a team to monitor, he added.
Morant was limited to 20 games this past season because of injuries and off-court issues, and reports indicated friction with members of the Grizzlies’ coaching staff before his year ended in January. Despite those concerns, the explosive point guard has shown he can alter a franchise’s direction when healthy.
The Pelicans are evaluating roster changes after a disappointing campaign that included coaching turnover and another year outside serious playoff contention. Should they pursue Morant, point guard Dejounte Murray is expected to be a central piece in any prospective trade package, according to Amick.
Beyond New Orleans, Sacramento, Minnesota, Miami and Milwaukee have all been linked to Morant in various offseason reports.
