Hall of Fame center Patrick Ewing has accepted a position on Brian Keefe’s coaching staff with the Washington Wizards, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The move marks Ewing’s first coaching role since serving as a New York Knicks ambassador beginning in 2024. It also brings the 11-time All-Star back to the city where he led Georgetown to the 1984 national championship and three Final Four appearances.
Ewing, 63, compiled a 75-109 record as Georgetown’s head coach from 2017 to 2023, guiding the Hoyas to a lone NCAA Tournament berth. His NBA coaching résumé spans 15 seasons, starting with the Wizards during the 2002-03 campaign and including stints with Houston, Orlando, and Charlotte, where he was Steve Clifford’s associate head coach.
While his background suggests a focus on Washington’s frontcourt—now featuring Anthony Davis, Alex Sarr, and incoming center Deandre Ayton—The Athletic’s Josh Robbins notes that Ewing’s past assignments extended beyond working with big men, even though he famously mentored Dwight Howard in Houston.
Ewing joins a roster the franchise believes is poised to climb the Eastern Conference standings after mid-season trades for Davis and Trae Young and the selection of AJ Dybantsa with the No. 1 overall pick. Young signed a four-year extension in June, and the Wizards have reportedly dismissed recent speculation about moving Davis to Golden State.
