Miami Heat president Pat Riley, now 80 years old, told reporters on Monday that he has no intention of leaving the franchise despite a season that ended with a 43-39 record and a play-in loss to the Charlotte Hornets.

“I’m not going to retire. I’m not going to resign. I’m not going to step aside,” Riley said, adding that he still hopes to see “another parade down Biscayne Boulevard.”

Franchise Seeks Quick Turnaround

Miami’s winning record failed to produce a postseason berth for the first time in team history, a result Riley called unacceptable. “We’re not good enough. We’re not happy with it,” he said.

Riley pointed to salary-cap flexibility, trade exceptions and additional assets as tools the front office can use to reshape the roster. “We’ll remain aggressive as hell in trying to improve,” he noted. “We’re always going to try to win. We’re not going to apologize for it.”

Rozier Trade Revisited

The veteran executive also addressed the ill-fated acquisition of Terry Rozier, who was arrested and indicted in a federal gambling investigation and never appeared in a game for Miami. The Heat waived Rozier earlier this month; Charlotte later sent Miami a 2026 second-round pick to settle the dispute. “We traded for a player that we felt, at that time, was a real upgrade to the roster,” Riley said.

Four Frustrating Years

Reflecting on recent seasons, Riley expressed his frustration. “I’m really pissed. I’m disappointed,” he admitted, emphasizing that the organization remains singularly focused on winning.

Older and admittedly quieter, the Hall of Famer made clear that his competitive drive is intact—and that any conversation about retirement will have to wait.
