Pat Riley Urges Heat to Trust Young Core, Says Lottery Pick Could Be Trade Bait

Miami Heat president Pat Riley used his annual end-of-season media session to press for greater patience with the team’s younger players and to acknowledge that the franchise’s upcoming lottery pick could be moved if the right deal appears.

Speaking at the team’s practice facility earlier this week, Riley said head coach Erik Spoelstra may need to “play it through their bad times” instead of pulling youngsters after early mistakes. “They’re not the top five picks in the draft,” Riley added, underscoring that Miami’s developmental prospects require time on the floor to grow.

The Heat have walked a fine line between contending and developing in recent seasons, regularly leaning on undrafted players and late draft selections to fill rotation spots while pursuing deep postseason runs. Riley’s comments signaled a stronger mandate to let those players learn on the job, even if it costs regular-season wins.

Lottery pick on the table

Miami holds a projected No. 13 pick in June’s NBA Draft, and Riley confirmed the selection is available in trade discussions. He emphasized, however, that the organization is not looking to absorb “damaged goods,” indicating Miami would only part with the pick for a proven, healthy impact player.

“Stay ready to strike if something real comes along,” Riley said, framing the approach as consistent with the Heat’s long-standing philosophy of simultaneously cultivating talent and chasing stars.

No specific trade targets were mentioned, and Riley did not outline a timeline for any potential moves. For now, the message to Spoelstra and the roster was clear: expect a longer leash for the Heat’s youngest contributors when the 2024-25 season tips off.
