NBA Teams Pour Cash Into Extensions as Free Agency Market Sputters

NBA free agency generated little buzz this summer, even with the league’s salary cap climbing 10 percent. Instead of chasing new talent, front offices funneled their resources into retaining core players through long-term extensions.

Data compiled by HoopsHype shows that more than 62 percent of all guaranteed money committed this offseason went to players staying with their current clubs. The nine richest contracts were extensions, not free-agent signings.

Thunder Lead the Spending Spree

Oklahoma City accounted for nearly $764 million in new guarantees by inking Shai Gilgeous-Alexander ($285.4 million), Chet Holmgren ($239.3 million) and Jalen Williams ($239.3 million). The trio helped deliver the franchise’s most recent championship and now represents more than half of the league-wide guaranteed money awarded to this year’s entire free-agent class.

Few Big Payouts for Players on the Move

Among players with the freedom to change teams, only Minnesota Timberwolves sixth man Naz Reid ($125 million) and Dallas Mavericks star Kyrie Irving ($118.4 million) cracked the top 12 in total contract value. Myles Turner was the lone player to switch clubs on a deal topping $100 million guaranteed.

Outlook for 2026

The trend may continue. Trae Young currently headlines HoopsHype’s 2026 free-agent board, yet league observers do not regard him as a franchise-altering signing and he could sign an extension before reaching the market. Should that happen, Kevin Durant would move to the top spot, but reports indicate he is also progressing toward an extension with Houston. If both players stay put, LeBron James could end up as the most sought-after free agent in 2026—16 years after his landmark “Decision.”

Largest Contracts of the 2024 Offseason

1. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander – $285.4 million
2. Chet Holmgren – $239.3 million
3. Jalen Williams – $239.3 million
4. Paolo Banchero – $239.3 million
5. De’Aaron Fox – $228.6 million
6. Jaren Jackson Jr. – $205 million
7. Luka Dončić – $165.3 million
8. Mikal Bridges – $150 million
9. Devin Booker – $145.3 million
10. Naz Reid – $125 million
11. Jabari Smith – $122 million
12. Kyrie Irving – $118.4 million

The dominance of extensions in 2024 suggests the traditional free-agency frenzy may be giving way to a new era in which teams prioritize continuity and financial stability over headline-grabbing signings.
