Spurs, Knicks to open NBA Finals on Wednesday in San Antonio

The 2024 NBA Finals will tip off Wednesday night at Frost Bank Center, where the San Antonio Spurs host the New York Knicks in Game 1 of a best-of-seven series.

The matchup revives a championship rivalry last seen in 1999, a year that ended with San Antonio claiming its first league title.

Spurs arrive ahead of schedule

San Antonio secured its place by eliminating the reigning champion Oklahoma City Thunder in seven games. The Spurs’ rapid turnaround comes less than two years after selecting Victor Wembanyama with the No. 1 overall pick. Rookies Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper joined the 20-year-old centerpiece in a postseason run that now sits four victories from a championship.

Wembanyama has produced star-level numbers throughout the playoffs, and San Antonio’s young core has shown growing poise in late-game moments. A title would rank among the fastest climbs from lottery team to champion in modern league history.

Knicks chase first crown since 1973

New York returns to the Finals for the first time in 25 years after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals. The Knicks ride an 11-game winning streak into San Antonio, led by All-Star guard Jalen Brunson. Frontcourt additions Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges and OG Anunoby have given the franchise its deepest roster in decades.

The Knicks last hoisted the Larry O’Brien Trophy in 1973, and four more wins would end one of the NBA’s longest active title droughts.

Key matchup and recent history

New York captured the regular-season series 2-1, but the Finals may hinge on whether the Knicks’ defense can limit Wembanyama’s impact. Success in that assignment could deliver New York’s first championship in more than half a century; failure might signal the birth of a new Spurs dynasty.

Game 1 is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
