New York — Knicks center Mitchell Robinson intends to be on the floor for Game 1 of the NBA Finals, even after having surgery to repair a fractured right pinky finger, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported. The 26-year-old still needs final medical clearance, but team officials say he has not abandoned his plan to play.

Limited work since surgery

Head coach Mike Brown told reporters Robinson has been restricted to individual drills and has yet to take part in full-contact practice since sustaining the injury. Robinson’s presence is viewed as a potential swing factor against Victor Wembanyama and the Spurs’ front line, thanks to his size, shot-blocking and offensive rebounding.

Kerr pulling for former assistant

Golden State coach Steve Kerr said he will follow the series closely as Brown, a six-year member of Kerr’s staff in Oakland, pursues his first championship as a head coach. “I’d be thrilled for him,” Kerr said, praising Brown’s organizational skills and attention to detail while recalling their three titles together with the Warriors.

Finals officiating crew set

The NBA assigned 12 referees to the series, headlined by Tony Brothers and Marc Davis, each preparing for a 15th Finals appearance. Scott Foster was selected for a 19th trip, while Curtis Blair will work the championship round for the first time.

Old-school court look returns

League officials confirmed that the Larry O’Brien Trophy graphic and the script “The Finals” logo will be painted on the hardwood again this year, reviving a design element many fans had called for since it disappeared in recent seasons.

Game 1 of the best-of-seven series is scheduled for Thursday night at Madison Square Garden, pending Robinson’s final medical evaluation.
