The Minnesota Timberwolves have classified guard Anthony Edwards as “week to week” after an MRI at the Mayo Clinic confirmed a left knee hyperextension and bone bruise, the team announced on Tuesday.
The update supports an earlier ESPN report indicating the All-Star would miss multiple weeks. Minnesota holds a 3-1 lead over the Denver Nuggets in their first-round playoff series.
Edwards was hurt late in the second quarter of Game 4 when he leaped to challenge a layup by Cameron Johnson. Johnson’s forward momentum knocked Edwards backward in midair, and Edwards landed awkwardly, causing his left knee to buckle. He immediately clutched the knee before being helped off the floor.
The 22-year-old entered the postseason managing a lingering right knee issue that sidelined him for much of the regular-season stretch run. Through four playoff games he has averaged 18.5 points, 6.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.3 blocks while shooting 35.8 percent from the field, 25.8 percent from three and 85.7 percent at the free-throw line.
Minnesota’s backcourt has taken another hit after starting guard Donte DiVincenzo sustained a torn right Achilles tendon early in Saturday’s victory. In their absence, head coach Chris Finch is expected to lean on Ayo Dosunmu, Mike Conley, Bones Hyland and Terrence Shannon Jr. for the remainder of the postseason.
