Veteran point guard Chris Paul, 40, remains on the Clippers’ payroll in what is expected to be his final NBA season, yet he has not been with the club since Los Angeles announced on December 3 that it was parting ways with the future Hall of Famer.

Multiple reports indicate the separation stemmed from repeated clashes between Paul and members of the roster, coaching staff, and front office. According to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne, those tensions built over several months rather than erupting in a single incident.

Sources told Shelburne that Paul argued frequently with head coach Tyronn Lue and, in particular, assistant coach Jeff Van Gundy. The disagreements extended to Paul’s responsibilities: the Clippers expected a low-maintenance veteran who would play sparingly, while Paul sought an opportunity to earn minutes and function as an on-court extension of the staff.

The relationship deteriorated during training camp. Players and coaches reportedly bristled at Paul’s direct feedback and forceful style, even as the second unit he led often outperformed the starters. Forward John Collins noted that Paul’s group “was regularly kicking the starters’ ass” in those sessions, leading Paul to believe his role could expand.

“He wears you out,” an executive from another team told ESPN, adding that Paul’s conviction he is “often right” can grate on colleagues. That executive questioned why the Clippers signed Paul “if all they wanted was a cheerleader.”

Shelburne reports that Paul attempted several team-building exercises during the season and voiced concerns about locker-room culture, but those efforts failed to gain traction. Brook Lopez and Kawhi Leonard were described as Paul’s strongest allies, while friction with Lue and Van Gundy persisted. Paul ultimately met with president of basketball operations Lawrence Frank before the organization opted to cut ties.

The Clippers have not indicated plans to recoup salary or pursue further action, and Paul has not commented publicly since leaving the team.
