Cleveland Cavaliers guard James Harden was arrested early Saturday in Houston after police reportedly found a handgun in his vehicle, according to court documents reviewed by the Houston Chronicle.
The records state that at approximately 3:40 a.m., Harden was driving a Mercedes sedan in a convoy of five cars through downtown Houston. Officers had already pulled over one of the vehicles near the 1600 block of Jefferson Street when Harden stopped behind it.
During the stop, an officer allegedly noticed a handgun resting in the cup holder of Harden’s car. Harden, 36, told police the firearm belonged to him, the documents say. He was taken into custody on a misdemeanor weapons charge and booked into Harris County Jail.
Harden was released later Saturday on a general order bond. Court records list his next appearance for June 22.
The Cavaliers issued a brief statement Saturday acknowledging the incident and saying the organization is gathering additional information.
Harden joined Cleveland in a February trade and helped the team reach its first Eastern Conference Finals since 2018. He averaged 20.5 points and 7.7 assists during the regular season and 19.2 points with 5.5 assists in the playoffs. After the Cavs were eliminated, Harden said he hoped to remain with the franchise. He is represented by agent Tony Payne.
