Dallas Mavericks governor Patrick Dumont indicated the organization wants Jason Kidd to remain on the sideline despite a 26-56 season and an ongoing search for a permanent head of basketball operations.

“He knows the game,” Dumont told The Dallas Morning News when asked to assess Kidd’s work during the 2025/26 campaign. Dumont cited injuries to Kyrie Irving and others, pointing to the team’s effort in numerous close games as evidence of Kidd’s impact. “That’s really a testament to Coach Kidd and the rest of the coaching staff,” he said.

Speculation earlier this year suggested Kidd might transition into a front-office position, but recent reporting indicates he is more likely to stay in his current role. Dumont called the Hall of Famer “an important voice in our organization” whose insights are highly valued by ownership.

Front-office search continues

Multiple league sources told The Athletic that Mark Cuban’s support for former executive Dennis Lindsey could diminish Lindsey’s odds of returning to Dallas. The Mavericks have genuine interest in Timberwolves president Tim Connelly, though Connelly may prefer to remain in Minnesota. Dumont believes the current interim tandem of Michael Finley and Matt Riccardi performed well in February’s Anthony Davis trade.

Staff changes in health and performance

Director of health and performance Johann Bilsborough was dismissed, marking the fourth consecutive offseason the Mavericks have altered that department, ESPN reported. Bilsborough had clashed with former athletic performance director Keith Belton, who was let go in 2025. The incoming head of basketball operations is expected to select Bilsborough’s replacement.

Flagg draws high praise

Kidd closed the season by elevating 19-year-old forward Cooper Flagg’s profile, asserting the rookie demonstrated he is already among the NBA’s elite. “We’ve seen a historic rookie season,” the coach said.

Despite the disappointing record, team personnel expressed confidence to Mavs.com that 2025/26 was an outlier and that improvement is expected when play resumes in 2026/27.
