The Dallas Mavericks have begun a broad search to replace former head coach Jason Kidd, reaching out to an estimated dozen candidates, according to The Stein Line.

Interviews are expected to include NBA assistants Micah Nori (Timberwolves), Royal Ivey (Rockets), Jama Mahlalela (Raptors), Tony Dobbins (Celtics) and Heat consultant Noah LaRoche. Veteran coach Terry Stotts, who previously led the Hawks, Bucks and Trail Blazers and most recently worked on Steve Kerr’s staff in Golden State, is also slated to meet with the club.

Dallas has already lost one potential target. Former Mavericks assistant Sean Sweeney agreed to join the Orlando Magic before serious talks could begin.

The organization is exploring college ranks as well, holding preliminary discussions about Duke’s Jon Scheyer and Michigan’s Dusty May. Scheyer is widely expected to stay in Durham.

New team president Masai Ujiri said the search will not be limited to conventional NBA options, noting that international and women’s basketball coaches are also under consideration. “Our minds are very open,” Ujiri said.

The exhaustive approach comes with the NBA Draft later this month, where projected No. 1 pick Cooper Flagg is viewed as a cornerstone of the franchise’s future.
