LAS VEGAS — The Orlando Magic kicked off NBA Summer League play with a 3-1 record after Wednesday’s win over the Philadelphia 76ers, fueled by a core that already logged a full G League season together.

G League chemistry drives early success

Center Colin Castleton, wings Alex Morales and Lester Quinones, and forward Phillip Wheeler — all teammates last season with the Osceola Magic — have spearheaded the strong start. Big man Will Baker and guards Ace Baldwin Jr. and Johnell Davis round out the summer roster.

“We’ve already been in a couple Summer Leagues, but playing a full season together is huge,” Castleton said. “A-Mo, Lester, Phil — having that connection really helps us down the stretch.”

Washington showcases skills

Guard TyTy Washington Jr., the No. 29 pick in the 2022 draft and a member of the Los Angeles Clippers last season, is using Las Vegas to make his case for a roster spot. “If you can shoot the three above 40 percent, you can help any NBA team,” Washington said, noting offseason work on his body and perimeter game.

Nelson sidelined by ankle surgery

Second-round pick Izaiyah Nelson underwent successful surgery to repair a fractured left ankle, he announced Tuesday on Instagram. Orlando acquired the No. 51 selection in a draft-night trade and signed the 6-10 forward to a two-year, two-way contract in early July.

Sweeney’s journey to the bench

New head coach Sean Sweeney rose from a 5-11 point guard at the University of St. Thomas to the top assistant on last season’s championship-winning San Antonio Spurs staff. “It’s the culmination of two decades of pouring his heart and soul into basketball,” former college coach Johnny Tauer said, praising Sweeney’s leadership and work ethic.

Business operations promotions

The Magic elevated several executives on the business side, naming Jay Riola Chief Strategy and Business Officer and Shelly Wilkes Chief Marketing Officer, among other moves announced in a recent team release.
