LeBron James is weighing multiple scenarios ahead of free agency, and a return to the Los Angeles Lakers is no longer considered the overwhelming favorite, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report.
Fischer told RealGM that executives and agents around the league “definitely” believe the four-time MVP has “many outcomes on the table,” adding it could be “more likely than not” that James departs Los Angeles. He also noted that pathways still exist for the 39-year-old to re-sign with the Lakers.
The uncertainty follows a quiet stretch between the two sides. Shams Charania reported that Los Angeles and James have had minimal contact since teams were allowed to negotiate with their own free agents, and the Lakers have yet to extend a formal contract offer.
While James considers his options, Fischer said the Lakers are prioritizing the search for a starting-caliber big man to pair with Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves, pushing resolution of James’s future down the offseason agenda.
League sources told Fischer that James is not expected to rush his decision; his free agency could stretch beyond the June 30 market opening. The Golden State Warriors continue to be mentioned as a possible destination, while recent speculation has linked the Miami Heat after their acquisition of Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Cleveland Cavaliers also surface periodically because of James’s history there, though no credible reports indicate advanced talks with any team.
For now, the NBA’s all-time leading scorer remains unsigned, and the league waits to see which direction he chooses.
