The Los Angeles Lakers have begun evaluating trade scenarios for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo ahead of the summer transaction period, according to multiple reports.
Front-office staff are “doing their homework” on what it would take to acquire the two-time MVP, league sources said. The long-term vision, those reports add, would be to unite Antetokounmpo with Luka Doncic and accelerate the franchise’s push back into championship contention.
Expensive asking price expected
Milwaukee is not believed to be entertaining discounts. Any negotiation is expected to demand significant draft capital, young players and other foundational pieces. While Los Angeles owns some movable assets, executives around the league do not view the club as having an abundance of them.
Guard Austin Reaves, widely regarded as the Lakers’ most attractive trade chip, is projected to reach free agency, and the organization has signaled it wants to keep him. Retaining Reaves would narrow the team’s maneuverability in talks with Milwaukee.
League-wide competition looms
The Lakers first checked on Antetokounmpo at February’s trade deadline, joining a large group of clubs that inquired about his availability. Rival front offices are expected to re-engage if the Bucks give any indication that the forward could be moved.
Questions about market preference
Off the court, Antetokounmpo recently said he preferred Miami over Los Angeles when asked to choose between the two destinations, calling L.A. “superficial” and stating, “I don’t like L.A.” League insiders note that player opinions can shift, but the comment adds another variable for the Lakers to navigate.
For now, Los Angeles is investigating its options. Whether those efforts can realistically pry Antetokounmpo from Milwaukee remains uncertain.
