The Los Angeles Lakers could enter the offseason with considerable salary-cap space, but converting that flexibility into upgrades may require painful sacrifices, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst told rival executives.
According to Windhorst, other front offices label much of the Lakers’ projected room as “phantom” because unlocking it would mean cutting loose key performers. Creating a sizable gap under the cap would likely involve moving on from LeBron James and Rui Hachimura, a duo that combines for about 32 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists per game.
The club is also widely expected to keep restricted free agent Austin Reaves. Retaining the guard would preserve an important contributor but would not, by itself, elevate the roster, Windhorst noted.
Los Angeles’ front office is now exploring ways to strengthen the lineup around Luka Doncic, who missed the entire postseason with a hamstring injury yet remains the franchise centerpiece.
Center is a primary area of focus. Windhorst cited restricted free agents Walker Kessler and Jalen Duren as potential targets, though prying either player loose would be complicated. Trade scenarios remain an option but would demand additional assets and intricate cap maneuvering.
Despite the uncertainty, many league insiders still predict James will eventually re-sign in Los Angeles, a scenario that may represent the team’s most straightforward path forward after a 53-win season.
For now, expectations around the NBA are tempered: a dramatic Lakers overhaul this summer may be harder to execute than raw cap numbers suggest.
