With LeBron James poised to enter unrestricted free agency, multiple well-connected NBA reporters believe the Los Angeles Lakers remain in the strongest position to re-sign the 20-time All-Star.
Veteran journalists Jake Fischer and Marc Stein reported that executives and agents around the league widely expect James to stay in Los Angeles if he continues his playing career. The four-time champion and his family have lived in Southern California since 2018, and the Lakers hold his full Bird rights, allowing them to offer a new deal without the salary-cap limitations facing rival clubs.
ESPN’s Brian Windhorst delivered a similar assessment on The Pat McAfee Show, calling a Lakers return “the most likely outcome” while stressing the need for a contract figure that both rewards James and leaves room for roster upgrades.
Warriors Monitoring the Situation
Fischer and Stein added that Golden State maintains “legitimate interest” in pursuing the 39-year-old forward. James has long-standing relationships with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green and enjoyed playing under Warriors coach Steve Kerr during Team USA’s preparation for the 2024 Olympics. Financial constraints, however, would limit Golden State’s ability to match what Los Angeles can offer unless the Warriors orchestrate a larger trade.
Cleveland Scenario Considered Unlikely
Talk of a third stint with the Cleveland Cavaliers persists among fans, but insiders view that path as remote. Both Fischer-Stein and Windhorst cited Cleveland’s roster questions and projected cap limitations, noting the franchise would need major moves to craft a competitive proposal.
For now, consensus among prominent league observers is clear: if James opts to keep playing, the Lakers are best positioned to secure his signature, with the Warriors looming as a distant alternative and the Cavaliers facing steep odds.
