LOS ANGELES — A short postseason break did little to slow the Lakers, who opened their first-round series with a 107-98 victory over Houston on Sunday night.

LeBron James guided the offense from the start, handing out eight first-quarter assists and finishing with 19 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds. Every Los Angeles starter scored in double figures as the club continued to navigate injuries to Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Houston’s challenge grew minutes before tip-off when Kevin Durant was ruled out.

Luke Kennard paced the Lakers with 27 points, thriving on catch-and-shoot looks created by James. Deandre Ayton supplied 18 efficient points, and Rui Hachimura added 14. Although turnovers allowed Houston to trim the margin late in the second quarter, Los Angeles quickly steadied and never relinquished control.

Game 2 is set for Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena, with Durant’s status again in question and the Lakers carrying a 1-0 edge.

Nuggets 116, Timberwolves 105

DENVER — Jamal Murray delivered 30 points and a flawless 16-for-16 effort at the foul line to push the defending champions past Minnesota in their series opener.

Denver’s perimeter shooting vanished after halftime—1-for-17 from three—but Murray compensated by repeatedly attacking the rim. “I thought I got fouled on every single one of them,” he said of his free throws. “Real fouls.”

The guard’s aggression preserved a lead that had shrunk into single digits. “Jamal has been Jamal all year, just tough-minded,” acting coach David Adelman noted. Murray went 0-for-8 from long range, a rarity Denver will try to correct before Game 2 on Wednesday.

Timberwolves Seek Answers

Minnesota stayed within reach for much of the night but faltered in the details. The Nuggets attempted 16 more free throws, a gap coach Chris Finch highlighted postgame. “It’s almost as many as we shot all game,” he said, stressing the need for greater composure.

Anthony Edwards scored 22 points while working back from a knee issue. Finch described the performance as “normal for what he’s been through,” though it fell short of what Minnesota required.

Game 2 will test whether the Timberwolves can tighten execution and cut into Denver’s 1-0 lead.
