Head coach Doug Christie will return to the Sacramento Kings next season after impressing team leadership with his work developing rookies Nique Clifford, Maxime Raynaud and Dylan Cardwell, general manager Scott Perry said Wednesday during exit interviews.
“Doug’s relentless energy, his leadership with these young guys, his patience, never wavered throughout a challenging year,” Perry told reporters after the 22-win campaign.
The Kings used 34 different starting lineups as injuries limited Domantas Sabonis to 19 games, Keegan Murray to 23 and Zach LaVine to 39. Christie pledged to “eventually produce a winner come hell or high water,” adding that the roster’s shooting, defense and rebounding potential remains intact when healthy.
Luxury-tax squeeze
Perry acknowledged the organization sits roughly $20 million over the luxury tax and nearly $4 million above the second apron. “My philosophy is never to be in the luxury tax unless we have a roster ready to compete for a championship,” he said, noting management has “a number of avenues” over the next several months to reach compliance while improving the team.
Westbrook, DeRozan decisions ahead
The club is open to re-signing 37-year-old point guard Russell Westbrook, who averaged 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and 6.7 assists in 64 appearances after joining on a one-year contract. “Russell’s always welcome with me,” Perry said. “I loved working with him this year.”
A key call involves DeMar DeRozan’s contract, which carries only $10 million guaranteed of his $25.7 million salary for 2026-27. Waiving or trading the veteran scorer could ease Sacramento’s tax burden, according to ESPN’s Bobby Marks.
Staff turnover
Christie confirmed assistants Dipesh Mistry and Jimmy Alapag will not return next season as the coaching staff undergoes changes.
With player development highlighted, cap maneuvering on the horizon and veteran futures unresolved, Sacramento heads into the offseason seeking a healthier campaign and a more balanced payroll.
