Golden State continues to negotiate with longtime head coach Steve Kerr, whose contract ended when the Warriors’ season concluded, league sources told reporter Marc Stein this week. Kerr met with team executives and ownership on April 27, but no decision has been reached on whether he will return for a 13th year on the bench.

Team governor Joe Lacob acknowledged the uncertainty during a Sportico conference on Wednesday, saying a resolution on Kerr’s status could come “today, tomorrow or in three weeks,” according to Stein.

Warriors Eye 2026 Lottery Pick

If Golden State keeps its 2026 lottery selection, assistant general manager Larry Harris called the upcoming draft class “very, very, very good” and said the organization is confident in players available whether the pick lands in the top four or stays at No. 11—or even drops to No. 12. Harris emphasized on Friday that securing a young, exciting prospect is essential if the club retains the pick.

Schmitz Leaves Portland for Dallas GM Post

Mike Schmitz, previously an assistant general manager with the Trail Blazers, is departing to become general manager of the Mavericks, Sean Highkin reported. Schmitz, respected for his scouting and international connections, advocated drafting Shaedon Sharpe No. 7 overall in 2023 and urged Portland to trade for Deni Avdija in 2024. He also helped build the infrastructure for the Rip City Remix, the franchise’s G League affiliate.

Blazers GM Joe Cronin congratulated Schmitz, telling The Oregonian/OregonLive, “Today is a celebration… We’re incredibly thankful for his contributions.”

Riccardi Remains in Draft-Lottery Role

Although Schmitz’s arrival could trigger additional changes in Dallas, Matt Riccardi—who has served as co-interim GM with Michael Finley since November—will represent the Mavericks at Sunday’s draft lottery, Stein confirmed. Riccardi’s continued visibility suggests he may stay with the organization, though his exact duties have not been detailed.
