James Harden was not on board with the idea of adding Chris Paul to the Los Angeles Clippers, according to Kevin O’Connor of Yahoo Sports.
O’Connor reported that Harden voiced resistance to the move, a position tied to the two guards’ turbulent partnership with the Houston Rockets. Their clashes in Houston ended with Harden pushing for Paul’s 2019 trade to the Oklahoma City Thunder.
Paul’s Brief L.A. Run
Paul rejoined the Clippers earlier this season but appeared in only 16 games. He averaged 2.9 points, 1.8 rebounds and 3.3 assists while struggling from the field at every level.
The Clippers now must determine how to proceed. Options include waiving Paul and absorbing his $3.6 million salary, negotiating a buyout, or waiting until Dec. 15, when he becomes eligible to be traded.
Locker-Room Friction
Broderick Turner of the Los Angeles Times reported that teammates grew weary of Paul’s constant criticism despite his limited role, with one source saying “everyone was fed up.”
Harden’s Reaction
After a win over the Atlanta Hawks, Harden told reporters he was “confused and shocked” by Paul’s departure. “That is out of my hands,” he said. “I guess the front office felt that was the best decision.”
Paul’s Résumé Remains Intact
Despite the rocky L.A. stint, Paul’s career accolades include 12 All-Star selections, 11 All-NBA nods and nine All-Defensive honors. Listed among the NBA’s 75 greatest players, he intends to continue his career—just not in a Clippers uniform.
