The Miami Heat are widening their scope ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft, with assistant general manager Adam Simon stressing that lack of size will not automatically disqualify a prospect.
“Who doesn’t like length? Who doesn’t like athleticism? Who doesn’t like positional size?” Simon said, according to the South Florida Sun Sentinel. “But there’s heart and there’s IQ and there’s ability to outplay deficiencies that you might have based on size.”
Miami finished 10th in the Eastern Conference last season and is evaluating lottery talent while simultaneously being mentioned in trade chatter for Milwaukee Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo. Even if a blockbuster move materializes, the franchise still expects to bolster its roster through the draft.
Several smaller backcourt options projected for the first round include Alabama’s Labaron Philon Jr., Texas Tech’s Christian Anderson, Louisville’s Mikel Brown Jr., Houston’s Kingston Flemings and Baylor’s Cameron Carr. Simon pointed to league history—where undersized or less athletic players have reached the Hall of Fame—as proof that production can outweigh physical measurements.
Recent playoff performances by guards such as Jalen Brunson, who led the New York Knicks to the NBA Finals, reinforce Miami’s stance that impact can trump inches. If a similar profile is on the board when the Heat are on the clock in 2026, organizational philosophy suggests he will receive full consideration.
