The Miami Heat enter the offseason with only 12 players on standard contracts and plan to sign at least two more before opening night, according to Barry Jackson and Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald.
Team president Pat Riley has identified three priorities: an additional playmaker, a dependable three-point shooter and a front-court piece who can either stretch the floor or protect the rim.
LeBron James continues to dominate speculation around Miami’s plans and would satisfy the playmaking need if he opts to return to South Florida. Should James choose a different destination, the Herald notes that DeMar DeRozan has surfaced as a potential fallback option, though the Heat have not committed to pursuing the veteran forward.
Shooting remains another area of focus. The Heat are monitoring Klay Thompson, but there is no indication the Dallas Mavericks intend to buy out the veteran guard. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Buddy Hield are viewed internally as strong fits, yet either player would first have to become available. Free-agent guard Bradley Beal is also on Miami’s radar for perimeter scoring help.
There has been league chatter suggesting Kevin Love might follow James if the four-time MVP signs with Miami, the Herald added. To date, however, the Heat have not taken steps to make that scenario happen.
