The Atlanta Hawks will move forward with their “Magic City Monday” promotion during the March 16 home game against the Orlando Magic, CBS Sports reported, even after public pushback from NBA players.
The themed night is designed to honor Magic City, a well-known Atlanta nightlife venue. Team principal owner Jami Gertz is scheduled to help debut the “Hawks AF” podcast as part of the in-arena festivities.
San Antonio Spurs center Luke Kornet asked the Hawks to cancel the promotion in a blog post earlier this week. “The NBA should desire to protect and esteem women,” Kornet wrote, expressing concern that the event could send an inappropriate message about the league’s values.
Kornet later told reporters in Philadelphia that he spoke out to ensure “another perspective was heard.” Golden State Warriors veteran Al Horford publicly supported Kornet by reposting the statement on social media and writing, “Well said Luke.”
Despite the criticism, the Hawks have not altered their plans and intend to host the promotion as scheduled.
