Fort Myers, Fla. — Brad Branson, who played for the Cleveland Cavaliers and Indiana Pacers during the early 1980s, has died at the age of 67. No cause of death has been announced.
The 6-foot-10 big man was selected by the Detroit Pistons in the second round of the 1980 NBA Draft. He appeared in 35 games for the Cavaliers in the 1981-82 season and 33 games for the Pacers in 1982-83.
Although his NBA stint was brief, Branson excelled in the Continental Basketball Association. With the Anchorage Northern Knights in 1981-82, he was named CBA Newcomer of the Year, earned an All-Star selection, led the league in blocked shots and captured MVP honors in the All-Star Game.
Former teammate Steve Hayes recalled their time together in Anchorage, writing on Facebook that Branson was “a great friend and teammate” and will be missed.
Branson extended his professional career overseas, playing for clubs such as Real Madrid and Pamesa Valencia into the mid-1990s. Before turning pro, the Fort Myers native competed at Edison State College and Southern Methodist University.
He is remembered by teammates and opponents alike as a respected presence on and off the court.
