Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra is widely expected to become the next head coach of the United States men’s national basketball team, according to multiple reports on Thursday.
Insider Shams Charania of ESPN reported that USA Basketball plans to elevate the longtime Heat coach to the position. The official agreement has not yet been finalized, but Spoelstra has emerged as the clear favorite to succeed Steve Kerr, The Associated Press’ Tim Reynolds added.
Spoelstra, who has guided Miami since the 2008-09 NBA season, would take over the national program ahead of its next major international competitions. His appointment would extend a coaching lineage that has recently included Kerr and, before him, Gregg Popovich and Mike Krzyzewski.
Details of Spoelstra’s expected contract and staff have not been disclosed, and USA Basketball has not announced a timetable for making the hire official.
