Erik Spoelstra Set to Lead Team USA Men’s Basketball, Sources Say

USA Basketball plans to appoint Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra as the next head coach of the U.S. men’s national team, according to sources familiar with the decision.
Spoelstra, 54, would replace Steve Kerr and guide the program through the 2027 FIBA World Cup and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. He served as Kerr’s lead assistant when Team USA captured the gold medal at the 2024 Paris Games.
The move continues the succession model created by Team USA managing director Grant Hill, in which lead assistants transition into the top job. Kerr previously followed Gregg Popovich, who himself succeeded Mike Krzyzewski for the 2020 cycle.
Spoelstra’s résumé includes two NBA championships, six NBA Finals appearances, and the league’s longest current head-coaching tenure. He ranks fifth all time in NBA postseason victories and owns the franchise record for wins with the Heat.
Team USA defeated France 98-87 in the 2024 Olympic final, earning its fifth consecutive men’s basketball gold medal and 17th overall.
