As the Knicks chase their first championship since 1973, projected top-10 pick Darius Acuff is studying Jalen Brunson’s postseason run and telling NBA teams he can provide a similar spark at the point, ESPN reported.
The 6’2″ guard said he grew up admiring undersized playmakers such as Allen Iverson and Stephon Marbury and has now added Brunson to that list. “We feel like we can go out there and play against anybody,” Acuff said, comparing his mentality to Brunson’s. “I feel like I can hopefully do the same thing one day, and it’s definitely inspiring to see.”
A Western Conference scout echoed that optimism. “Brunson has kind of brought back the smaller, scoring, tough physical point guard that can lead a team,” the scout said. “Acuff has some of those traits. He might even have a little more.”
This year’s lottery is crowded with traditional point guards, and several prospects are hoping to convince clubs that size is no longer a disqualifier at the position.
Additional Draft Developments
Keaton Wagler — The Illinois freshman will work out for the Kings next week, according to Kevin O’Connor’s latest Yahoo Sports mock draft. The Clippers had been linked to Wagler with the No. 5 pick but may be cooling on the 19-year-old shooter. He also canceled a scheduled session with the Nets, though it is unclear whether that move was logistical or related to Brooklyn’s plans at No. 6.
Jack Kayil — One of the few prospects still in season, the 6’5″ German combo guard scored 10 points in ALBA Berlin’s semifinal clincher, sending the club to the German Bundesliga Finals against Bayern Munich. Kayil averaged 12.3 points in 21.3 minutes this year and flashed deep shooting range despite overall inefficiency. ESPN’s Jeremy Woo currently ranks him 37th.
Malique Lewis — The 6’8″, 21-year-old forward has been cleared by the NBA’s fitness-to-play panel after missing the G League combine because of a longstanding heart condition, Draft Express reported. Lewis impressed scouts at the adidas EuroCamp in early June with his passing, rebounding and perimeter touch. For South East Melbourne, he logged 7.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals in 21.3 minutes, shooting .455 from the field, .387 from three and .800 at the line. Woo places him 67th on his board.
