Los Angeles Clippers forward Derrick Jones Jr. has been diagnosed with a sprained medial collateral ligament in his right knee and will be re-evaluated in no less than six weeks, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The injury occurred late in the second quarter of Sunday’s defeat in Boston. As Celtics wing Jaylen Brown scrambled for a loose ball, incidental contact caused Jones’s knee to bend inward, leaving the 27-year-old writhing in pain. He was helped to the locker room and could not put weight on the leg.
Clippers staff members were relieved the damage was not more severe, The Athletic’s Law Murray reported. Even so, the loss removes one of the club’s top perimeter defenders and a trusted lob threat. Jones had averaged 10.9 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.1 blocks while shooting 54.0% from the field through 12 games (26.0 minutes per contest).
Additional injury updates
• Third-year wing Jordan Miller aggravated a left hamstring strain in the same game. The two-way player, who poured in a career-high 22 points in his season debut last Wednesday, will sit out Monday’s matchup in Philadelphia but is not expected to miss significant time.
• Rookie guard/forward Kobe Sanders, also on a two-way contract, is slated to make his first NBA start on Monday.
• Star forward Kawhi Leonard has resumed on-court activities while rehabbing right ankle and foot sprains. A timetable for his return has not been announced, though the Clippers’ current road trip concludes next Tuesday against the Lakers.
Los Angeles entered Monday with a 7-5 record.
